Breeding Guppies

My guppy tank set up. This set up is not for breeding show guppies. This method is just for fun or practice. Equipment
10 gallon tank
Regent 5-10 filter
2 breeder nets
1 Penn-Plax 5 Plus Breeder, Nursery and Display Tank Description
Versatile unit quickly and easily adapts for use as single livebearer trap, double livebearer trap, egglayer rod trap, single or double betta display tank, single or double isolation tank, or nursery tank. Hangs on side of community aquarium

I do not have any plants or decorations in my tank. No rocks. This makes the tank easier to clean. That way you can put in more than double the fish that the tank would normally hold. Choosing your breeders
First thing I do is buy a bunch of big guppies bigger guppies have more babies. Try to buy 2 males to every one male. Feeder guppies often have less than average numbers of fry at a time. If you are breeding guppies to get feeders try to get clear females, that way it is easier to tell when they are pregnant.

So now you have a ten gallon tank with about 10 adult guppies. Twice a day take a piece of air tubing and syphon waste and uneaten food off of the bottom. The current should push most of it into one spot in a bare tank. It should only take about 2 minutes to clean the entire tank. I use air tubing because it is easier to work with than regular aquarium vacuums. Replace water. If you do this twice a day you should more than meat the water change requirement. Maternity
Ok, now the good part. Pick out the females that have a dark spot by their anal vents. Put them into the pen plax breeder. I have had up to 5 females in it at one time. When they drop their fry they will be sucked under the maternity unit and into the nursery. I leave them there until I am sure the female is finished having fry. Then I dump them into a breeding net. This is the best way to get the highest yield. Plants do not work for keeping fry from being eaten. And having your tank full of crap limits your ability to clean the tank as well as it needs to be. This tank is not for looks. I keep mine in the spare bedroom. Mommy
Wait a few days if possible before returning mommy back into the population. Let her recover before turning her loose. Males will go after her as soon as she is back in with them. It is important to make sure she is fully recovered so the males will not chase her to death. Turning them loose
After about a month your fry can be put in with the adult guppies. Don't worry about keeping your batches of fry separate from other batches of fry. Just make sure that the smallest guppy is bigger than the largest guppies mouth. Feeding
A lot of people tell you to feed fry baby brine shrimp. I have never touched brine shrimp in my life. I feed my fry ground up flakes. It is important to feed the babies a lot at first. I can't explain it very well but I will try. The first few weeks of a guppies life all of it's energy is devoted to growing. After that all of the energy goes to reproduction. So it is very important that they get all they need to eat during this stage. I dump in a lot more food than they could eat. 10 minutes later I syphon the rest off of the bottom of the tank or breeding net. Do it again
Just keep dumping fry into the general population as soon as they are big enough, separating pregnant females, turning them loose after they give birth and recover until you are over stocked. Tips
Keep in mind that this is a utility tank. Keep it free from plants, gravel, decorations. The more waste you remove by sucking it off of the bottom the more fish you can have in the tank. Don't worry about inbreeding. For feeders don't worry about breeding at all. Guppies will breed. They will have babies. That is what they do. Don't stress about it. If you think your guppies are not having babies you are wrong. They are eating them. Or you have all males or all females. I can not tell you enough how important it is to syphon as much waste as you can as often as you can. This will also limit algae growth and take care of water changes. Guppies should have fry around every 28 days.
